{{#badges: CoalSwarm}} 700 Mountains is a grass-roots citizens group formed to fight a proposal by the Bush administration's Office of Surface Mining (OSM) to relax environmental regulations to enable the coal industry to use a controversial mining technique called "mountain top removal." Mountain top removal mining removes the top of a mountain in search of coal and deposits the spoils in adjacent valleys. If this new legislation is approved, more than 700 mountains could be effected, with potentially devastating results for the landscape and local ecosystems.
