"Mr. Kemble passed away in October, 2005.
"Mr. Kemble is a Senior Scholar at Freedom House and Director of a Project on Democracy and the Global Education that is jointly administered by Freedom House and the Foundation for Democratic Education. Mr. Kemble returned to Freedom House after eight years of service under President Clinton. During that period he served as Deputy Director of the United States Information Agency. In 1999 he was named Special Representative of the Secretary of State for the Community of Democracy Initiative an undertaking that brought together representatives of 106 countries in Warsaw in June, 2000. In 2002 Secretary of State Colin L. Powell appointed Penn Kemble to organize an Eminent Persons Group -- Sudan Slavery Commission -- to study the issue to recommend steps that can be taken by parties to the conflict and the international community to end such abuses."
