Background
In 1999, Mining Weekly said that the Leandra North and Leandra South coal project "will see the mining of the No 4 seam, which overlies the present Delmas Colliery No 2 seam workings, and which will extend further to the west. The development of the No 4 seam reserves in Leandra North could provide up to 30 years of mining, depending on production rates, while the adjacent Leandra South reserves – which contain both the No 2 and No 4 seams, with even greater volumes, could add additional life."[1]
BHP Billiton listed it as a possible underground mine producing thermal coal in its 2009 Annual Report. It listed its "measured resource" as being 156 million tonnes with a total resource of 715 million tonnes.[3] BHP Billiton Energy Coal South Africa is BHP Billiton's wholly owned subsidiary which develops coal projects in South Africa.
In its 2014 annual report, BHP Billiton reports this project's "measured resources" as 210 million tonnes and its "total resources" as 507 million tonnes.[4]
BHP Billiton announced in its 2015 annual report that they were discontinuing this project, demerging it and, with a handful of other coal projects, rolling it into a new company called South32.[5]
