Background

In January 2013 it was reported that Egyptian Electricity Holding Company was considering a coal-fired power generation plant in Safaga, a town located on the coast of Red Sea. The proposed power station's capacity would be over 1,950MW and plans are to import part of the coal required at the plant from abroad, according to the Ministry of Electricity and Energy. The power plant is planned to come on line by 2020.[1]

In January 2016 it was reported that Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power was in the final stage of negotiations to construct a coal plant in Safaga with a capacity of 2,000 MW. Construction is planned for 2016 and operation in 2019.[2] As of June 2016 environmental impact studies were scheduled for December.[3]

However, there have been no developments on the project since 2016. Plans may have been replaced with the proposed Hamarawein IPP coal project near Safaga.
