In September 2017 an Environmental Impact Statement (EIA) was issued for Pacific Coast Coal Company's proposal to reopen the John Henry #1 Mine.[1] In April 2018 a permit to re-open it was issued by Washington state's Department of Interior’s Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE).[2] The mine was formerly operational from 1986-1999, producing 400,000 tons of coal per year.[2]
