Background

The Vijayawada Thermal Power Station (IGCC) is a 1760 megawatt (MW) coal plant operated by Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (APGENCO) in Vijayawada village, Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh. The plant is also know as Dr. Narla Tata Rao Thermal Power Station or Dr. NTTPS. It consists of 7 units, commissioned as follows:[1]

  • Unit 1 - 210 MW - 1979
  • Unit 2 - 210 MW - 1980
  • Unit 3 - 210 MW - 1989
  • Unit 4 - 210 MW - 1990
  • Unit 5 - 210 MW - 1994
  • Unit 6 - 210 MW - 1995
  • Unit 7 - 500 MW - 2009

Proposed 800 MW expansion

According to a January 2012 report posted on the website Industry Monitor, the Andhra Pradesh government has decided to make use of vacant space at three existing power plants in order to build an additional 2,400 MW of capacity. The three plants are Vijayawada station, the Krishnapatnam power station, and the Kothagudem Thermal Power Station. At the Vijayawada station, the government proposes an 800 MW expansion on 50 acres of wasteland adjacent to the current site.[2]
