Bt Soybeans are genetically engineered soybeans that produce an insecticidal protein like the one naturally produced by the bacteria species Bacillus thuringiensis. Currently, only one variety of Bt soybean has been deregulated in the U.S. - the MON 87701 soybean, made by Monsanto, which was deregulated in 2011. Bt crops and genetically modified organisms are controversial around the world.
