{{#badges:CoalSwarm}}Gardabani power station is a proposed 300-megawatt (MW) proposed coal-fired power plant in Kvemo Kartli, Georgia.

Location

The map below shows the approximate location of the project, in Gardabani.

Background on Plant

In 2012 the Georgian Industrial Group said it had signed a contract with the Turkish company Mimsam to construct a 160 MW coal power station in Gardabani, near the border to Azerbaijan. The power station will be fed with domestically produced coal from a mine in Tkibuli in the west of the country.[1]

In September 2015, Chinese state-owned Dongfang Electric Corporation pledged $180-$200 million for construction of a 150 MW coal plant in Tkibuli, in Georgia’s western Imreti region. The offer was made at a meeting between Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and Dongfang representatives, shortly prior to the World Economic Forum in China.[2]

On October 16, 2015, an agreement was signed between the Georgian Government and Tkibuli-150 for the construction of a 150-300 MW coal-fired power plant in Tkibuli municipality. Under the agreement, construction should start no later than 30 September 2016 and be finished before 1 January 2020.[3]

On 30 June 2016 an amendment providing for the construction of thermal power plant in Gardabani instead of Tkibuli, was introduced to the agreement.[3] GIG said the "alternative location was decided after the company considered the findings of geological and environmental studies." The coal plant is now planned to be 300 MW.[4]
