An article from August 2018 noted: "The business has come a long way since 2013 when Gowers took the helm. He was charged with leading a turn-around of the group which had suffered a crisis as interest on its towering debts became unsustainable. Just before he was hired, the firm went through a company voluntary arrangement where 49 sites closed. The current owners, GoldenTree Asset Management, Avenue Capital and Goldman Sachs, took control of the business via a debt-for-equity swap from Dubai International Capital. " [1]
