Biographical Information

"Archy Kirkwood trained as a solicitor in Scotland before being elected to the House of Commons in 1983. He was created a Knight Bachelor in 2003 for services to Parliament and elevated to the House of Lords in 2005. As a member of the Commons, Archy was appointed Chief Whip of the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary party for the period 1992-1997, held the post of Chair of the Select Committee on Social Security from 1997-2005 and served as a member of the House of Commons Commission from 1997- 2005.

"He has recently been elected as the Chair of the Information Committee of the House of Lords. Archy serves as a Trustee /Director of several organisations in the UK including the Wise Group, CentreForum, GovNet Communications and the Institute for Fiscal Studies. He is curently a lay member of the General Medical Council. Since 2008 Archy has worked with GPA on parliamentary strengthening projects in countries including Oman and Bahrain. He is part of GPA’s core group that has been working with MPs, committees and staff in the project with the Iraqi Council of Representatives since 2008."[1]
