Background

The sponsor of the project, Mantri Power, is a subsidiary of the Mumbai-based Mantri Realty Limited. The project would be located at Bela village, approximately 40 kilometres away from Nagpur. The Purti Group is a 25% shareholder in Mantri Power.[1]

A 2007 report on the proposed Bela power station stated that "around 60% of the power generated will be supplied to the state power utility, while 25% would be sold to other buyers across the state. The rest will be kept for domestic consumption in the company's projects".[1]

The contract for the main plant package was won by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited in May 2009.[2]

The status of the project is not confirmed. Wikimapia shows "Mantri Power Project" at 20°48'23"N 79°3'7"E; however, no major buildings appear to have been constructed.[3]

In 2014 Mantri Power Chairman and Managing Director Sunil Mantri said the project had been deferred and the location would likely be changed: "We have slightly kept [the power station] on hold due to the coal linkage issue. We realized that until we have a proper coal linkage, we will not be able to offer a competitive price and hence we have deferred the power plant as of now. At the current location, the cost would be extremely high due to the logistics involved in getting coal. In fact, we are planning to shift to another location where coal linkage would be available even though some of the [licenses] have been obtained for the current location.”[4]

With no further activity on the project after two years, it appears that the project has been abandoned.
