Background

The project is proposed for 630 hectares acquired from the state-run Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation and is adjacent to the land on which JSW ISPAT Steel is planning to build the Bhadravati power station (Ispat). According to MIDC's Managing Director K Shivaji, "This is part of our endeavour to encourage power plants in electricity deficient state. MIDC has so far been helping industries by getting clearances, facilitating land acquisition to start one." In the case of Bhadravati, MIDC has initiated the process of seeking coal linkage and other clearances. Two or three clearances have already been obtained, according to Shivaji in 2010.[1]

In 2011 MIDC received a terms of reference for one 660 MW unit.[2]

In 2013 MIDC invited bids for a 1,320 MW thermal power plant at Bhadrawati under build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) basis. The company said it had applied for environmental clearance.[3]

However, as of May 2017 the project has yet to receive environmental clearance. With over four years of inactivity, the project appears to be abandoned.
