Background

According to a March 2012 report in the Daily Sun, S Alam Group will install a 217 MW coal plant in Bhola on a Build Own Operate (BOO) basis. The project will be a joint venture with India's Lanco Infratech Limited. Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) will buy power at Tk 2.80 per kilowatt hour. The report said that a proposal for the plant had been sent to the Cabinet Committee on Public Purchase. A requirement of the tender floated by BPDB is that 75 percent of the funds would be collected from foreign sources.

According to a September 2013 report in the Dhaka Tribune the S Alam Group "is eyeing" two coal plants, one at Chittagong and the other at Barisal. The company offers to sell electricity at Tk6.75 per unit from the 276MW Barisal power project.

As of April 2016, no subsequent reports on this project can be found, and it is not mentioned on the S. Alam website. It appears to be shelved or abandoned.
