Center for Science and Culture
A Discovery Institute organization, established in 1996 to promote intelligent design (ID). Formerly called the Center for Renewal of Science and Culture (CSRC). Authored the infamous "Wedge Document".
- According to the Wedge Document, the strategy is designed to defeat “Darwinism” and to promote an idea of science “consonant with Christian and theistic convictions.” The ultimate goal of the Wedge strategy is to “renew” American culture by shaping public policy to reflect conservative Christian values.
The group's "de facto leader" is Phillip Johnson.
- The CRSC’s early website announced that new developments in the sciences were “raising serious doubts about scientific materialism and re-opening the case for the supernatural.” This was a clear signal to potential supporters that the CRSC was open for business as a religious organization dedicated to opposing evolution.
Projects
The center advertises fellowships of up to $50,000 a year for “support of significant and original research in the natural sciences, the history and philosophy of science, cognitive science and related fields,” but so far has been unable to produce any evidence for ID.
One Discovery Institute project is the website [http://www.reviewevolution.com/ Discovery Institute's Critique of PBS's Evolution] which criticizes the PBS Evolution series and includes a description of "intelligent design" ("a scientific research program as well as a community of scientists, philosophers and other scholars who seek evidence of design in nature"). For an assessment of the claims of the Intelligent Design movement from the perspective of mainstream science see TalkDesign.org.
