Domino's Pizza is the second largest pizza chain in the world (behind YUM! Brands' Pizza Hut). Domino's is located in over 50 countries with over 8,300 stores. The company owns some of the stores but most are franchised. [1]
History
- 1960 - Tom Monaghan and his brother James begin the chain with the first outlet in Ypsilanti, Michigan, USA.
- 1961 - Tom gets all of the business by giving his brother James a Volkswagen Beetle.
- 1965 - The company starts using the name Domino's Pizza, Inc.
- 1975 - Amstar Corp. which makes Domino Sugar sues Domino's Pizza for using the name.
- 1980 - Domino's Pizza wins the lawsuit and can continue with the name.
- 1983 - The first international stores open in Winnipeg, Canada and Queensland, Australia. The 1000th store opens this year.
- 1985 - The first stores open in England and Japan.
- 1998 - The 6,000th store opens in San Francisco, California. Tom Monaghan, announces his retirement and sells 93% of company to Bain Capital, Inc.
- 2003 - Domino's partners with NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) and becomes the 'Official Pizza of NASCAR'.
- 2006 - Domino's opens its 8,000th store worldwide, 5,000 of which are in the US. The 3000th international store is in Panama City, Panama.

The Domino's Pizza political action committee gave $26,500 to federal candidates in the 05/06 election period - 0% to Democrats and 100% to Republicans.[3] David A. Brandon, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Domino's personally gave $37,265 to Republicans ($0 to Democrats) in this same period. [4]
