This official portrait of the Clintons and Pauls depicted the business alliance that was formally entered into the night of August 12, 2000, when Paul produced and underwrote the Hollywood Farewell Tribute to President Clinton, the largest event ever produced for a US President in Hollywood, and the largest fundraiser ever produced for a federal candidate, benefitting Hillary Clinton's 2000 Senate campaign.
The Gala became known as Event 39, the title used by Hillary Clinton's Senate campaign to identify the event to the Federal Election Commission in a series of False FEC Reports that hid the identity and more than $1.2 million donated by Paul to benefit Hillary's campaign.
After a Justice Department and FEC investigation of the false reports filed by Hillary's campaign between October 2000 and July 2001, Hillary Clinton's National Finance director, David Rosen was indicted and tried for election fraud in 2005 and Hillary's campaign treasurer, Rosen's boss, Andrew Grossman was forced to admit he filed false reports hiding more than $721,000 contributed by Paul.
Hillary vowedto the Washington Post in two separate articles on August 15 and August 17, 2000, that she would not accept any money from Peter Paul for her campaign (because of three felony convictions he received in the late 1970's)She secretly coerced more than $1.2 million in contributions from him to ensure his desired business arrangement with Bill Clinton when he left the White House.
