GEPIC Zhangye power station (甘肃电投张掖发电公司) is a 650-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant in Gansu Province, China.

Background on Plant

The two existing coal-fired units of GEPIC Zhangye power station, totaling 650 MW, were brought online between 2005 and 2006. Gansu Electric Power Investment and SDIC are 2 investors. The proportion of the investment is GEPIC 55% : SDIC 45%.

Description of Expansion

GEPIC and SDIC) were planning to build two additional coal-fired units at this plant, with a total planned capacity of 1,320 MW. The feasibility study completed in 2008. However, the project has little progress since then. In 2014, SDIC was seeking buyers to sell the 45% of the shares of Zhangye Power Station.

Nationwide Restrictions Imposed on Development of Coal-Fired Power Capacity

In 2016 the National Energy Administration and the National Development and Reform Commission announced guidelines for restricting coal-fired capacity in China. In January 2017 China's National Energy Administration suspended specific coal-fired projects, including GEPIC Zhangye. It is unclear when or if the projects will be revived.
