Background

Gudur Thermal Power Project (Momidi) is a proposed 2640 megawatt (MW) coal plant in Momidi, Chillakkur mandal, Nellore district. The project is planned in two phases, each 1320 MW.[1] The project was issued a Term of Reference (ToR) on September 9, 2010.[1] In 2011 the company applied for consideration under the Clean Development Mechanism. The company argued that the plant would be significantly more efficient than the norm for India:[2]

The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has estimated the efficiency of subcritical power plants to be 32.63% based on the normative Gross Heat Rate of 2450 kcal/kWh in India. The estimated station heat rate in the project activity will be around 2176 kcal/kWh2. Based on this data, it is evident that the efficiency of power plants using supercritical technology would be more efficient in comparison to the power plants using subcritical technology.

Since 2011, there have been no reports of further development of the project and no applications for further environmental clearances. The project appears to be shelved or cancelled.
