Gwayi power station is a proposed 1,200-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power station in Gwayi, Zimbabwe. It is sponsored by Shanghai Electric Group, Shenergy Co Limited, and Nan Jiang Group.

There is also a 600 MW proposed coal plant at Gwayi, sponsored by China Africa Sunlight Energy: Gwayi Mine power station.

Background

In July 2014 a memorandum of understanding was signed between a joint venture led by Shanghai Electric Group and the Zimbabwe government for a 1,200 MW power station and mine in the country's western coal mining region. The joint venture also includes Southern Africa Shanghai Energiser Company (SASEC) and Chinese firms Shenergy and Nan Jiang Group. SASEC aims to sell the plant’s power to state-owned Zimbabwe Power Company, as well as exporting to the region.

In September 2014 it was reported the project cost was US$5 billion and the location Gwayi, Matabeleland North.

With no developments since 2014, plans for the plant appear to be deferred or abandoned.
