Background on Plant

The two existing coal-fired units of Huaneng Tongchuan power station, totaling 1,200 MW, were brought online in 2007. The plant is owned by China Huaneng.[1]

Proposed expansion

Huaneng is planning to build two additional coal-fired units at this plant, with a total planned capacity of 2,000 MW. The project was on hold, having not been approved for an environmental permit due to air issues with the plant's location.[2]

The new units were permitted in 2015,[3] and are under construction.[4]

Nationwide Restrictions Imposed on Development of Coal-Fired Power Capacity

In January 2017 China's National Energy Administration suspended over 100 planned and under-construction coal power projects with a total capacity of over 100GW in 13 provinces, including Huaneng Tongchuan. It is unclear when or if the projects will be revived.[5]
