Huaneng Tongchuan power station (华能铜川照金发电厂二期扩建项目) is a 1,200-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant in Shaanxi Province, China.

Background on Plant

The two existing coal-fired units of Huaneng Tongchuan power station, totaling 1,200 MW, were brought online in 2007. The plant is owned by China Huaneng.

Proposed expansion

Huaneng is planning to build two additional coal-fired units at this plant, with a total planned capacity of 2,000 MW. The project was on hold, having not been approved for an environmental permit due to air issues with the plant's location.

The new units were permitted in 2015, and are under construction.

Nationwide Restrictions Imposed on Development of Coal-Fired Power Capacity

In January 2017 China's National Energy Administration suspended over 100 planned and under-construction coal power projects with a total capacity of over 100GW in 13 provinces, including Huaneng Tongchuan. It is unclear when or if the projects will be revived.
