Background

The power station is located in Jaigad, in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra. It is owned by JSW Energy, a company controlled by the Jindal family. The final unit began commercial operation in October 2011.

3,200 MW expansion put on hold

The 3,200 MW Ratnagiri Power Plant expansion has been proposed by JSW Energy for the same location.

Maharashtra is among India’s most industrialized states, and is reportedly seeking to make itself an "attractive investment destination" for manufacturers to maintain its primacy in the sector.

In July 2011, JSW Energy said it was delaying expansion of its 3,200 MW coal plant in Ratnagiri as it waits for coal-pricing “clarity” from Indonesia and Australia.

Citizen opposition

In May 2011, farmers marched to protest coal plants in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, in an area known as the Konkan Coast. The protests were organized by the Ratnagiri Zilla Jagruk Manch, an organization leading a campaign against seven thermal power plants proposed for the district. In Pawas, Ratnagiri district, villagers protested with a hunger strike.
