Joel M. Geiderman

Joel M. Geiderman, M.D. "was appointed to the United States Holocaust Memorial Council in 2002 by President George W. Bush, who then named him Vice Chairman in August 2005. He was reappointed to the position in April 2007. The 55 Presidentially-appointed Council members and ten from the U.S. Congress, comprise the governing board of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The Museum, America’s national memorial to the victims of the Holocaust, is a public-private partnership with a $69.7 million budget. Since opening in April 1993, more than 24 million people have visited the institution, including more than seven million schoolchildren and 85 heads of state.

"Before becoming Vice Chairman, Dr. Geiderman held a number of key Council positions overseeing the Museum’s growth and development. He continues to serve on the Museum’s Executive, Governance, and Collections and Acquisitions Committees, and the Committee on Conscience, which addresses issues of contemporary genocide.

"A long-time supporter of the Museum and Holocaust remembrance, Dr. Geiderman is the son of the late Helen Geiderman, a Holocaust survivor from Czechoslovakia, and the late Albert Geiderman.

"An expert on the subject of medical ethics as related to the Holocaust, Dr. Geiderman is also a nationally recognized leader in the specialty of emergency medicine. He is Co-Chair of the Emergency Department at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and holds the rank of Clinical Professor of Medicine, Division of Emergency Medicine, at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

"Dr. Geiderman has served as an oral examiner for the American Board of Emergency Medicine since 1982 and has helped develop the board’s written examination since 1993. In 2003 he was elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He has authored more than 70 scholarly papers and book chapters in the field of emergency medicine.

"Active in community and civic organizations, Dr. Geiderman currently serves on the Board of Directors of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the Professional Council of Jewish Healthcare Foundation and “Jews for Judaism.” In 2000 received the Jewish Healthcare Foundation’s Avraham Moshe Bikur Cholim “Ahavas Chesed” award and was recognized as the 1997 “Humanitarian of the Year” by the United Hostesses’ Charities. In 2004 he was honored by the Sheba Medical Center in Tel Aviv as a “Medical Visionary.”

"Dr. Geiderman holds a Bachelor of Science degree in physiology from the University of Illinois, Champaign/Urbana, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and earned his medical degree at the University of Illinois Abraham Lincoln School of Medicine.

"Dr. Geiderman resides with his wife Roya and their four children in Beverly Hills, California."
