Jose Ramos-Horta is President of the Southeast Asian country of East Timor (Timor-Leste), a position he was elected to in May 2007. He previously served as the country's Prime Minister. [1]
On February 11, 2008, Horta was shot and seriously wounded during a confrontation between his security guards and disaffected former members of the military led by Alfredo Reinado. Reinado was shot and killed during the exchange of gunfire. [2]
Horta serves on the international advisory board for the Democracy Coalition Project and is on the International Council of Advisors for the International Campaign for Tibet.
