Background

In February 2013 the Times of India reported that the proposed plant would be an independent power producing project operated by Jindal Power Limited. The plant would cost Rs 18,000-19,0000 crore and need at least 50-60 million cubic metres (MCM) water per annum. Initially the plant was to be the in Chandankyari-Baliapur area of Bokaro district, but the state water resources department said it could not provide adequate water from the Damodar river basin. The company decided to shift the plant to Kamdara in Gumla district, where the state water resources department has agreed to provide water from South Koel.

As of October 2016, the project is not included on Jindal's list of expansion plans, and has yet to receive environmental permits. Plans appear to be deferred or abandoned.
