In August 2006 Mpumlwana stepped "down after serving for close to 10 years as regional director of Africa programs for the Kellogg Foundation.

"Mpumlwana, a bishop in the Ethiopian Episcopal Church, intends to focus on the social challenges of his pastoral ministry when he leaves the Foundation. In particular, he wants to work with communities and congregations to invest more in young people, especially those that are rendered vulnerable by poverty and disease. He hopes to contribute to the creation of an environment in which young people can be better placed to lead an African society that is comfortable with itself. He further aims to use his experience with the Kellogg Foundation to help strengthen social giving among those with wealth.

"While at the Kellogg Foundation, Mpumlwana oversaw an integrated program designed to promote the socio-economic transformation of the southern African region in this post-Apartheid period. The Foundation’s program in Africa hopes to create positive change by working to reverse the cycle of rural poverty, building healthy, viable, and sustainable rural communities through civic engagement; creating economic opportunities; providing education, skills and leadership development; and contributing toward the health and well-being of families, women, and youth. The Kellogg Foundation has annually awarded approximately $25 million USD to support efforts in Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland, and Zimbabwe...

"Mpumlwana will remain on staff as a senior policy advisor to the Kellogg Foundation until 2007. He will be replaced as regional director of Africa programs by Dr. Mandivamba Rukuni, who joined the Foundation in 1997, and previously served as program director."
