Background

Coal of Africa Limited (CoAL) bought the rights to the deposit when they aquired NuCoal Mining in January 2010.[1]

CoAL stated in its 2010 annual report that the deposit contains resources of 27.41 million tonnes of coal. It also states that the "quality is suitable for both export and Eskom markets."[1]

In March 2014, South Africa's Department of Mineral Resources approved the sale of the Opgoedenhoop mining right.[2] Miningmx reported that "the company had received a R5m deposit for the mineral right from an indisclosed buyer."[3]

CoAL changed its name to MC Mining in December 2017.[4]

After mentioning a default in 2018[5], MC Mining reported the conclusion of the sale in June 2019.[6] In November 2019, the Department of Mineral Resources reported it as an operating mine owned by Muhanga Mines.[7]
