{{#badges: CoalSwarm}} In 2005, Peabody Energy announced it was entering into an agreement with ArcLight Capital Partners, LLC to develop a commercial-scale coal gasification project in Illinois. The plant would transform coal into synthetic natural gas.

Peabody officials did not name a specific site in Illinois, but said the plant would be one of the largest coal- to-natural-gas plants in the United States.

The project would require at least 3 million tons of coal per year to produce more than 35 billion cubic feet of synthetic natural gas.[1]

As of November 2011, the project is not listed on the ArcLight's website list of active projects currently being pursued.[2]
