However, in October 2011, Pivot Bio, Inc. received a $100,000 grant from the Gates Foundation " to engineer crops that can capture and metabolize nitrogen from the atmosphere, reducing the need for petrochemical fertilizers and reducing the cost of farming in developing countries."[2]
