Background

Rourkela-2 is a 2 x 60 MW captive coal plant that powers the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP). The steel plant and power station are owned by NTPC-Sail Power Co Ltd (NSPCL), a joint venture of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and Steel Authority of India (SAIL). The coal-burning units were commissioned in 1987-1988.

Proposed Expansions

Rourkela unit 3 is a proposed 250 MW expansion of the power station. Environment Clearance for the project was received on May 30, 2015. Investment approval for the project was approved by the NSPCL Board in May 2016. An EPC package was awarded to BHEL in May 2016.

According to NTPC, commercial operation of unit 3 was achieved in December 2018.
