Paul LePage (R) and the Republican-held legislature when they [http://bangordailynews.com/2011/11/08/politics/early-results-indicate-election-day-voter-registration-restored/ approved] a referendum restoring election day voting registration rights in the state. Earlier this year, state legislators passed a [http://www.mainelegislature.org/LawMakerWeb/summary.asp?ID=280041037 bill] repealing the state's 38 year-old law allowing citizens to register at the polls on election day. Tens of thousands of Mainers responded by petitioning for the matter to come to a referendum. Issue 1 was one of the most-anticipated votes on election day this year, with pundits watching closely to see how citizens would react to the Republican-led [http://thinkprogress.org/progress-report/what-states-are-doing-to-restrict-voting-rights/ war on voting], which ramped up in states across the country this year. Recognizing the referendum's importance, voting rights opponents poured money into the campaign to repeal election day registration. In fact, just two days after the state's campaign finance reporting deadline, a secret conservative donor [http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2011/11/03/360076/maine-election-day-registration-conservative-money/ funneled $250,000] into the race, allowing the "No On 1" campaign to make significant TV ad buys in an inexpensive media market.Read the rest of this item [http://www.prwatch.org/node/11208 here.]

Ortega was one of the few reporters to be credentialed by ALEC for coverage of the conference. Following the incident where the police tore down the protesters’ banner, Ortega attempted to return to the conference. He was stopped by police in riot gear, pepper spray in hand, at the Westin gate. The cops told Ortega that he could not enter the grounds. Ortega showed them his ALEC-issued press credentials, identified himself and identified the paper he represented. "I don't care who you are, turn around and leave or you're going to be arrested," retorted one of the officers. Ortega persisted in arguing his point, explaining that he had permission from both ALEC and Kierland security to attend the conference -- at which point a cop grabbed him by the arm from behind. "Okay, you've been warned," said the cop, who commenced to march Ortega off to a waiting paddy wagon. Read the rest of this item [http://www.prwatch.org/node/11230 here].

Workers won a victory after the Governor rescinded new restrictions that had been created to limit the rights of Indiana citizens to freely access their state capitol building. Prior to last year's protests, citizens in Indiana, Wisconsin and other states had long enjoyed easy access to their state houses to express their views on legislation, but in Indiana -- as with Wisconsin and other states -- partisan political leaders imposed supposedly "safety-based" restrictions to limit citizens exercising their freedoms of assembly and speech. On Wednesday, faced with thick lines of constituents winding down the streets of the capitol, the state lifted the 3,000-person cap on the number of people who could enter the building where legislation is being pushed to restrict worker rights.
