==Background==
In February 2010, it was reported that construction would begin on the station<ref>[http://bit.ly/ABjb6E "GMR Chhattisgarh Power Project,"] GMR Energy, accessed February 2012</ref> in the following months, with the two units commissioned within 45 months and 50 months respectively.<ref>[http://bit.ly/zg2G88 "Work to begin by March on GMR's Chhattisgarh project,"] ConstructionUpdate.com, February 2010</ref> To comply with requirements that the project contribute in the development of the neighboring villages and supply potable drinking water to nearby villages and schools, the company reported that it had undertaken such activities in Raikheda, Gaitra, and Chicholi in 2009 and planned to start working with village Mura on the southeastern boundary of the proposed plant in April 2012. The company also said that it was working on socio-economic development with GMR Varalakshmi Foundation "in consultation with communities and their representatives," identifying the "poorest of the poor families" in order to undertake special interventions.<ref name=comp/>
The power station, which has been proposed by the [[GMR Group]], has a proposed commissioning date of 2014.<ref name=GMR>GMR Group, [http://www.gmrgroup.in/Energy/GMR_Chhattisgarh_Power_Project.html "GMR Chhattisgarh Power Project"], GMR Group website, accessed November 2011.</ref> Platts state that the first stage of the project is the commissioning of 1370MW in 2014 with a further 685 MW to be commissioned in 2015.<ref>Platts, [http://www.platts.com/Products/worldelectricpowerplantsdatabase "World Electric Power Plants Database, September 2011"], accessed November 2011. The database is not available online but a downloadable spreadsheet can be purchased.</ref> On its website GMR refers to the project as being a 1370MW project.<ref name=GMR/>
==Banks withhold funds==
According to a June 2012 report, although Phase I of the project had received all its approvals, banks were withholding funds from the project:<ref>KA Badarinath, [http://bit.ly/MPNMBG "Banks holding back lending to power ventures,"] Financial Chronicle, June 13, 2012</ref>
: "Also interesting is the case of GMR group’s Chhattisgarh energy project with two units of 685 mw each based on imported coal. As per the power ministry’s note to the finance ministry, this is one project where no clearances are pending. Still banks and financial institutions are to begin disbursement of debt funds for the project."
