==Background==
In January 2013 it was reported that Egypt is considering a coal-fired power generation plant in Safaga, a town located on the coast of Red Sea. The proposed power station's capacity would be over 1,950MW and plans are to import part of the coal required at the plant from abroad, according to the Ministry of Electricity and Energy. The power plant is planned to come on line by 2020.<ref>[http://fossilfuel.energy-business-review.com/news/egypt-is-planning-to-set-up-1950mw-coal-fired-power-plant-080113 "Egypt is planning to set up 1,950MW coal-fired power plant,"] EBR, Jan. 8, 2013.</ref> However, since the announcement there has been no news of developments on the project, even though work was to begin that year. The project appears to have been deferred or abandoned.
