Background

The project is proposed by Suryachakra Group. According to the company website: "The project is being set up under MoU with the Madhya Pradesh Government. Land acquisition is under process. Coal linkage is under process with the Ministry of Coal. Environment Clearance is under process."[1]

According to a December 2011 report in The Hindu Business Line, the Ministry of Environment and Forests deferred clearance of the plant. According to the report, "the Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) under teh MoEF is of the opinion that the project may fall within the buffer area of Sanjay Gandhi Tiger Reserve area, proposed to be set up in Sidhi district of Madhya Pradesh. The Committee ordered the company to obtain a no-objection certificate from the authorities concerned in the Wildlife Department."[2]

However, in 2012 the power station received a terms of reference, the initial step toward an environmental permit.[3]

In July 2014 it was reported that Suryachakra Thermal had put its plan to invest Rs.92 billion in a 1,320 MW power plant at Sidhi in Madhya Pradesh on hold due to non-availability of coal linkages.[4]

In its 2015/16 annual report, the company admitted that it had made no progress in moving the project forward. However, the company claimed to still be seeking "strategic investors," and for that reason it state that "no provision in the doubtful advances is considered at this time."[5]
