The EDF was founded when its founders discovered that the osprey, as well as several other large birds, were rapidly disappearing. Their research discovered that the spraying of DDT weakened the egg shells of the large birds and led to a higher fledgling mortality rate. To seek a ban on DDT, they started Environmental Defense Fund -- and were successful.
