University of California, Berkeley
The University of California, Berkeley is a major research institution located in the United States in the state of California. It was founded in 1968 as the first campus of the University of California, or 'UC' (now a public university system comprised of ten California universities). In the 1950s and 1960s, Berkeley was the site of numerous political movements; including the 1964 Free Speech Movement. By the late 60s, severe political unrest on and off the campus compelled Governor Ronald Reagan to declare a state of emergency and order the National Guard to occupy the city of Berkeley. Today, the campus is considered one of the world's elite academic institutions. It currently holds approximately 35,000 students.
