Marking Up Stories for Posting to Web
Please avoid: Cutting and pasting directly from the web browser into the WYSIWYG editor on either website or cutting and pasting directly from MS Word into the WYSIWYG editor of either website.
It's good practice to mark up the story in a plain text editor before it is moved to the web. You can find a free one on your Mac under Applications -> TextEdit. TextMate is also a good choice but it costs around $60 for a single-user license (I think it is a lifetime license though). More information is here. It is also safer to use a text editor like TextEdit or TextMate instead of editing directly in the WYSIWYG editor in case your Internet connection is interrupted or something else unforeseen happens. This way, you'll have your work saved in a file on your computer. When you've completed marking up the story in your text editor app, move it to the text editor on either Exposed or PRWatch.
I don't recommend using the rich text editor (WYSIWYG) on either website. It's better to use the plain text editor on both websites because you can see the HTML mark-up. On PRWatch, it's called "plain text vs. rich text" and, on Exposed, it's called "Text vs. Visual". Rich text editors are for inexperienced users who do not know how to manually mark up HTML and need to use WYSIWYG. I sometimes get unexpected results using WYSIWYG.
On Exposed, if you switch between the "Text" and "Visual" editor screens, the <p></p> tags will get stripped out. They are still there but you will no longer be able to see them. This is a weird Wordpress thing that we have to live with as long as the Visual editor is enabled.
Sometimes writers use the WYSIWYG editor to write stories but most of the time, they are going to send you the story in MS Word. Either way, cut and paste what they send you into your local text editor (TextEdit or TextMate), save it, and start marking it up and proofing it.
Be on the lookout for "weird" HTML mark-up; e.g. <span></span> tags, <div></div> tags, etc. that will need to be removed. There can be other unnecessary and sometimes troublesome mark-up especially when cross-posting stories from other websites.
It is also a good idea to have the writers send you the exact title, summary sentence, image that will be used for the story, and author name(s) when they send you their story.
Images can be found in the image libraries on both Exposed and PRWatch. It is good policy to search for an existing image before uploading a new one to prevent duplication. Sometimes writers want to use a new image. The ideal size for images for both websites for both story images and slideshow images is 960px (wide) x 560px (in height). When creating and uploading new images, give them a name that is understandable and searchable and, at a minimum, make sure to fill in the "alt" text for the image.
Since we are no longer using all caps but are now using mixed case for the title, headings and sub-headings on Exposed, please refer to Lisa's / Arn's style guide about capitalization rules. We have always used mixed case for PRWatch.
Be sure to check all hyperlinks that are sent with the story--sometimes links are incorrect--malformed, incomplete, or broken.
Here are some general style guidelines for mark-up, etc.

Removal of admin rights
Why has "Jordan Barden" removed my admin rights? He seems to have done that to a lot of editors. ≡ SCRIBE ≡ 22:19, 6 May 2015 (EDT)
- Hi Scribe: I've been cleaning up the admin list. It's not necessary to have the admin role in order to edit pages. Is there something you normally do that requires admin privileges? Thank you!! --Patricia Barden (talk) 11:55, 7 May 2015 (EDT)
- Hmmm, yes, as a long time wikipedia editor, I am aware of how wikis work. My admin status was bestowed so that I can stop vandalism, which used to be quite common a few years ago. I also created templates and did some admin type activities a few years back. It seems a bit high handed to simply remove admin status from long-time users without any notification. ≡ SCRIBE ≡ 03:34, 11 May 2015 (EDT)
- Hi Scribe: I did not intend to be high-handed. I'm restoring your administrative rights today. Thank you for your continued interest in SourceWatch! --Patricia Barden (talk) 11:32, 20 May 2015 (EDT)
