Abel prepared a December, 1982 comprehensive list of the scientific and popular literature on the effects of smoking on sexuality and reproductive functioning in humans and animals.  Materials dealing with sexual behavior, sexual function, and sexual physiology were included, and those dealing with tobacco's effects on the fetus and newborn child received the most emphasis. The introduction provided an overview of then-current findings concerning the relationship between reproductive functioning and smoking, as well as a guide to further reading.

Abel was a Research Scientist at the Research Insthute on Alcoholism in Buffalo, New York, in the 1980s. He prepared several bibliographies on health-related subjects, including ''A Comprehensive Guide to the Cannabis Literature'' (Greenwood Press, 1979), ''Alcohol and Reproduction'' (Greenwood Press, 1982), and ''Alcohol and the Elderly'' (Greenwood Press, 1980), with [[Grace M.
