{{#badges: CoalNewZealand|Navbar-NZcoal}}The Stockton mine is a sprawling opencut coal mine located approximately 25 kilometres north east of Westport and just inland from the small township of Granity on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. The mine produces sub-bituminous coal.[1]
In an April 2009 brochure on the mine Solid Energy states that the mine produces approximately 2 million tonnes of coking coal a year and that it "expects the Stockton operation to continue production at these levels for up to 20 years (to 2028)." The mine is operated by Stockton Alliance, "a partnership between Solid Energy and Downer EDI Mining NZ." Coal is sourced from a number of pits on the high altitude plateau.[2]
Coal from the mine is carried by KiwiRail's Midland railway line to Lyttelton Port of Christchurch.[3]
