Background

In March 2015 Kansai Electric Power Co. (KEPCO) announced plans to switch the thermal power generation fuel of Units 1 and 2 at the 1,200 MW Ako power plant from heavy and crude oil to coal.[1]

However, in a report released on January 31, 2017, KEPCO said it was canceling the planned conversion, due to declining power demand in the region and increased pressure to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. KEPCO will continue to run the plant on heavy/crude oil.[2]
