Alan Schlesinger, the Republican Party's U.S. Senate nominee, faced Democrat nominee Ned Lamont in the November 7, 2006, general election. Lamont defeated Democrat incumbent Senator Joseph I. Lieberman in the August 8, 2006, Connecticut Democrat primary. Lieberman announced that he would run as an Independent against both Schlesinger and Lamont. Lieberman retained his seat.
