Alexander Barton

In 1980, Andrew Hopkins wrote: "The New South Wales' (NSW) Corporate Affairs Commission is in the process of prosecuting two company directors, Alexander Barton and his son Thomas, for a series of alleged offences in which shareholders in Barton companies lost millions of dollars.

"One very striking feature of this prosecution is the vigor with which it has been pursued. The Corporate Affairs Commission has laid dozens of charges, devoted thousands of man-hours to preparing the evidence, assembled documentation on the.Bartons which occupies scores of feet of shelf space and hired one of the best lawyers in the country to prosecute the case (Mr Tom Hughes, QC, former Liberal Attorney-General). Moreover, the Commission went to very great lengths in seeking to have the Bartons extradicted from Paraguay, where they had sought refuge following the failure of their companies." [1]
