Biographical Details

"Ambassador Alphonse F. La Porta (Al) was US Ambassador to Mongolia in 1997-2000. Immediately prior to that, he was president of the American Foreign Service Association, the professional association and bargaining unit of the US Foreign Service. He was most recently president of the United States-Indonesia Society (USINDO), which is dedicated to promoting awareness of policy-related issues and building mutual understanding with that country. During his 38 years of service in the diplomatic corps, Al served overseas in Naples, Italy as political advisor to the NATO commander for the southern region, New Zealand, Indonesia (twice), Turkey and Malaysia. He has also worked in Washington on the Philippines, Cambodia, Indonesia, the UN specialized agencies, and in management. In Mongolia, he was accompanied by his wife Ann who is an attorney and served as rule of law consultant to USAID in the formulation of the judicial reform program. They have two children and two Mongolian grandchildren, Olivia Minjinsor Beach and Evan Irmuun Beach." [1]
