Anne Marie Lizin

Anne-Marie Lizin "is the President of Belgian Senate and Chairperson of the Foreign Relations and Defence Committee of the Belgian Senate. From 1979 to 1988, she was elected Member of the European Parliament. Since 1988, Lizin has held top level political mandates in Belgium as a member of the Government. She has served as an Independent expert to the Human Rights Commission on Human Rights and Extreme Poverty and as State Secretary for European Affairs. She is a member of the House of representatives and founder of the Investigation Commission into Trafficking in Human Beings. Presently, she is the Vice President of the Association of Cities for the whole Walloon Region, and the head of the Belgian NGO “Terres des Femmes” which draws up projects for women in Algeria and Afghanistan. Throughout her career, she has also participated in various humanitarian management projects, including the coordination of hospitals in Belgium for development projects, and in women's rights projects as chairperson of the largest Belgian women's rights organization. Lizin is a member of the Board of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the UN University in Turin, and the organizer of hundreds of seminars in international matters that have taken place in Belgium. She is a Professor at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques (Political Science) in Paris and the University of Liège, and the authour of many publications focusing on women’s rights."
