Proposed power station
In January 2014 it was reported that Tauron Group and Poland's largest chemicals maker Grupa Azoty were considering a power plant in Kedzierzyn-Kozle based on coal gasification technology. The first letter of intent on construction of a 300 MW power plant with carbon capture and storage technology was signed between ZAK Kedzierzyn, now a unit of Grupa Azoty, and Tauron in 2008, but was later found to be financially inviable.[1]
In June 2015 Poland approved a plan for Grupa Azoty to develop a coal gasification project, part of a wider program to boost Silesia, where the bulk of Poland's struggling coal mines are located. The investment is valued at US$480 million to US$1.1 billion, depending on whether the plant will produce hydrogen or methanol. Construction will take 5 to 6 years and the plant is expected to use 1 million to 2 million tonnes of coal annually.[2]
