Background

Project developer Universal Crescent Power received an Environmental clearance for Phase 1 of the power station in 2012, comprising two 660-MW coal plants. It is also pursuing a second and third phase for the power station, both also 2 X 660 MW, although as of September 2016 phases II and III have yet to receive any necessary permits.

As of August 2014 Universal Crescent was seeking environmental clearance for a jetty and seawater intake pipe for the 6x660 MW power station, but there has been no developments since, and the project appears to de deferred or abandoned.

Opposition

At a public hearing on September 20, 2011 and in subsequent letters, the majority of those testifying expressed strong opposition to building the plant. The following is a typical comment: "If the Saurashtra super thermal power project will be granted by the Govt. then agriculture land and agriculture crop, water sources like wells, borewells, field ponds and big lakes, river etc. will be abolished. As a result, our life will be destroyed and our right of agriculture and cattling will be damaged and the economic and social life of the people will become helpless."
