Background

In February 2014 Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren laid the foundation stone of the proposed 1320 MW Bhawnathpur power station, in Bhawnathpur township in Garhwa district. Also present was sponsor Jharkhand Vidyut Vikas Nigam Ltd (JVVNL), whose chairman SN Verma said land for construction had been provided by Steel Authority of India and coal supplies provided by Banhardih coal block. The projected cost for the project is Rs 8,500 crore.

Beyond the ceremony the project has received no permits as of end-2017. It is dubious that the project will advance.
