Blachownia power station was a 165-megawatt (MW) coal-fired power station in Blachownia, Poland.

Blachownia Nowa power station was a proposed 910 MW coal-fired power station at the site, which was later cancelled.

Background

The power station is a 3 x 55 MW subcritical coal plant, completed in 1958-1960. It was retired in 2014.

Blachownia Nowa

In March 2010, Tauron Polska Energia and its subsidiary Poludniowy Koncern Energetyczny signed an agreement with KGHM Polska Miedz on setting up a company "Elektrownia Blachownia Nowa" to build a coal power plant with a capacity of 910 MW at the premises of the Elektrownia Blachownia power station in Kedzierzyn-Kozle.

In 2012 Tauron and KGHM set up a special purpose vehicle (SPV) to instead build a combined-cycle 850 MW gas-fired power station. The investment costs were estimated at some PLN $3.5 billion and the project was to be put online in 2017. In 2013 the companies decided to temporarily suspend the project, extending the estimated project completion date to 2021.
