Additional information
Westport businessman, Robert Griffiths, took over the mining permits for Coalbrookdale Mine when the former state-owned enterprise, Coal Corp let them lapse.[7] In July 2011 the Brookdale mining assets on the Buller Plateau were sold to Bathurst Resources’ subsidiary, Buller Coal, for NZ$13.8 million. The assets included permits for opencast and potential underground mines covering an area of 341.6 hectares across three blocks, strategically located immediately above Bathurst’s Cascade mine and adjacent to the Escarpment block. This acquisition completed Bathurst’s consolidation of its South Buller operation where the company proposed to commence opencast mining for coking coal.[8]
