Broughton coal project

The Broughton coal project is a proposed opencast coal mine 27km north-west of the township of Nebo, 100km west south west of Mackay. This is in the Isaac Regional Council local government area of the Bowen Basin, Queensland Australia.

The proposed mine would last 15 years and would require the diversion of the Suttor Developmental Road, a creek diversion and flood levees to be built. The product coal would be transported on a dedicated haul road to a new train loading facility connected to the Hail Creek rail branch. The coal is currently proposed to be exported through the Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal, south of Mackay.

The application is considered to be lapsed by Queensland Government.

Coal Mine Background

On 13 September 2013, U & D Mining Industry (Australia) applied for an Environmental Authority permit. On 5 November 2013, the department notified U & D Mining Industry (Australia) that the application requires assessment by Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

The final Terms of Reference (TOR) for the EIS was issued to the proponent on 24 April 2015.

U & D Mining Industry (Australia) had until 24 April 2017 to prepare the EIS and submit it to the department for assessment. However, the EIS was not received by the due date. Consequently, the TOR for the project ceased to have effect and the TOR stage under Division 2 of the EP Act must be complied with again before the EIS for this project may be submitted.
