Bt Tomatoes are tomatoes genetically engineered to produce an insecticidal protein like the one naturally produced by the bacteria species Bacillus thuringiensis. Currently, only one variety of Bt tomato has been deregulated in the U.S. - tomato line 5345 made by Monsanto, which was deregulated in 2011. However, no Bt tomatoes are sold commercially as of 2012. Bt crops and genetically modified organisms are controversial around the world.
